What should you wear to your photo session
This is the question I get the most and for good reason. It can be overwhelming getting everything planned perfectly for your photo session and the one thing you do not want to skimp on is your outfit.
Here are some tips to help you select an outfit/s that will result in timeless and classic photographs:
Dress how you normally would, but just elevated!
- Neutral Colors:
Neutrals tend to blend well with different backgrounds and create a balanced look.
Light reflect off everything and you do not want an ugly colour cast on your skin. Imagine a bright pink reflecting onto your partner’s face. So rather go for neutrals like in the examples as you can see on the left. Obviously choose the colours, that suit you best and that you feel comfortable in.
- Avoid Busy Patterns and Logos:
Large or busy patterns, bold graphics and logs can take away from your photos. Rather choose solid colours or subtle patterns, such as delicate stripes or small prints that won’t overpower the whole look. The focus must be on you and your family! - Pay Attention to Fit:
Ensure that your clothing fits well and flatters your body shape. If you feel comfortable it will reflect in your photos.
If your photo session is going to take place on the beach on anywhere outside where there can be a breeze, keep the length of your dress (or even the dress slit) in mind if you are planning to wear one. It really isn’t fun if you have to pull on your dress through the whole session because of the wind. Rather choose a longer length. A Midi or maxi always looks nice. - Coordinate Colors and Styles:
Coordinate your outfits to create a balanced look if you are being photographed with a group. Choose complementary colors or shades from the same colour family. However, avoid perfectly matching outfits as it boring and dated. Preferably no jeans and white t-shirts 🙂 Instead, focus on coordinating elements like color palette, fabric texture, or overall style. - Accessories:
Simple and classic jewelry, watches, or delicate scarves can add a touch of sophistication to your look. Remember to keep accessories minimal, except if you want to make a statement with a portrait session. - Grooming:
Complete your look with well-groomed hair and makeup. A fresh set of nails also adds to the polished look. - Weather:
Keep the weather in mind. You want to be comfortable during your photo session so dress accordingly. Especially with kids! - Your house colours
Keep the colours of your house in mind when choosing your outfits if you want to frame some of your images. This is also a reason why neutrals is the best option as it will fit in any home if you decide to change your home’s interior colour.
The whole process should be fun. I created a Pinterest board with some ideas to get your started. Take a look HERE.
