5 Secrets of Beautiful Maternity Photos

If you’ve booked a studio maternity session (or you’re thinking about it), you might be wondering: How do I make sure my photos turn out beautiful?

1. Professional Hair and Makeup Is a Must

Let’s start with the biggest game-changer: professional hair and makeup. This isn’t just about looking glamorous (though you definitely will!). It’s about being photo-ready. Studio lighting is powerful—it picks up every detail, so it can also make unblended foundation or oily skin more noticeable.

A professional makeup artist knows how to:

  • Match your skin tone to studio lighting
  • Highlight your features naturally
  • Ensure your makeup stays put during the session

And your hair? Having it styled adds volume and polishes your overal look. You deserve to feel pampered and confident—it shows in every photo.

2. Timing Is Everything

The best time for maternity photos is between 27 and 34 weeks. Your bump is beautifully round, but you’re still comfortable enough to pose and move easily. After 35 weeks, many moms start to feel more tired and swollen, so plan ahead for that perfect timing.

3. This Is Your Time

For once, it’s not about the to-do list, the nursery checklist, or work calls. It’s about you. Maternity portraits are your chance to pause and enjoy this special time.

Studio sessions are designed to honor this moment—with guidance and a laid-back, calm energy. It’s not just a photo session—it’s your celebration.

4. Wardrobe Makes a Statement

What you wear matters. I offer a client closet with pretty dresses, fabrics for draping and some extra bits and pieces for my studio sessions. These are designed to flatter and photograph beautifully.

Choose pieces that:

  • Highlight your bump
  • Complement your skin tone
  • Make you feel beautiful and comfortable

Bonus tip: Bring nude and black seamless undergarments (just in case for wardrobe purposes).

5. Posing Is Everything—And It’s My Job

Many of my clients worry: “What do I do with my hands? Will I look awkward?” Let me reassure you—you don’t have to know how to pose. That’s what I’m here for.

As your photographer, I’ll guide you through every movement:

  • Where to look
  • Which way to tilt your head
  • How to pose your hands

This is not “just a photoshoot.” It’s a celebration. Of your journey. Of the life you’re growing. Of the transition into motherhood.

Trust the process. Sometimes the most magical images come from in-between moments you didn’t even realize were happening.
